Shepard Fairey...My Hero

I saw this show right before it closed. The grand finale before the closing of Deitch Projects was well done. They went out with a bang. I love his ability to merge graphics and fine art. Using patterns inside shapes is always a favorite technique of mine and he does it beautifully. His layered prints looked very hand painted. I have printed with silk screens a lot before (even did a self-portrait once) and totally appreciate how difficult it can be to make this indirect technique look so layered and painterly. The show was a 1 room gallery space filled with many portraits of influential pop icons that made you feel as if you were getting the essence of each person, all gathered in one room, quietly, alone with you. Pretty powerful. This work felt very sophisticated compared to his early André the Giant days. Although with the whole Obama thing and his "Exit Through the Gift Shop" project with Banksy, his roots as a gorilla/graffitist and social shaker-upper are still a passion for him. Read more info about the show here. Check it out the gallery space here.
