Patterns, silk screens and bold type...3 of my favorites!Guggenheim-Christopher Wool

The show just ended, but check out his bio and other work here. The Guggenheim has the best family studio on the basement that is FREE from 1-4 pm on Sundays. I am so glad I have kids, so I could partake. Us and our cute kids and their cute friend had to pose....

Space Jam...Nice Job!

I saw this Trudy Benson show at freight and volume that ended last month. Really good! I think it was her first show ever. I learned a new term...maximalist. ;)

Kiki Smith...I like how you think.

I saw the Kiki Smith show at the Brooklyn Museum (same day as the Fashion show) and was actually really drawn in by the videos of her talking about her work. The way she speaks about creativity and the process and being a female was so poignant for me right now. This idea of women needing space to be creative and that we are amazing creatures able to live, create life, keep lives and families thriving all while trying to carve out a little time/space for our own creativity. A quote from the shows intro was really what hit me...

"...privacy and personal liberty are vital to the success of creative pursuits." (Virginia Woolf "A Room of One's Own")...Space therefore is the key to artistic inspiration."

The show was pretty fun to experience. I do like her aesthetic and bits and pieces of the show, but wasn't blown away by her work as a whole. I actually really just love her process and watching and listening and imagining her working on it all. She talks about this "fluttery chaos" that she feels she needs to have around her in order to create. Maybe I can channel that way of working. I definitely have the chaos thing going on. It think it would be fun to be her assistant. Although with this review, I probably wouldn't get very far with her. Lillia said it was "too scary for her". Maybe it was the funny little sculptures of child-like people?? And Theo was pretty mellow through it all.

The Henri Cartier-Bresson Photography Show...A MUST See!

Showing at MOMA until June 28th. Check it out here. So much more impactful in person. It's a HUGE show, so go early. A pioneer of his time. A true artist with the camera.

Shepard Fairey...My Hero

I saw this show right before it closed. The grand finale before the closing of Deitch Projects was well done. They went out with a bang. I love his ability to merge graphics and fine art. Using patterns inside shapes is always a favorite technique of mine and he does it beautifully. His layered prints looked very hand painted. I have printed with silk screens a lot before (even did a self-portrait once) and totally appreciate how difficult it can be to make this indirect technique look so layered and painterly. The show was a 1 room gallery space filled with many portraits of influential pop icons that made you feel as if you were getting the essence of each person, all gathered in one room, quietly, alone with you. Pretty powerful. This work felt very sophisticated compared to his early André the Giant days. Although with the whole Obama thing and his "Exit Through the Gift Shop" project with Banksy, his roots as a gorilla/graffitist and social shaker-upper are still a passion for him. Read more info about the show here. Check it out the gallery space here.

Absolutely Beautiful!

This show at Mike Weiss gallery is over, but I can't stop thinking about it. Elisa Johns mixes a little bit of magic in with her paint, I think. Sophisticated, feminine, ethereal and a little bit rock and roll. I would totally buy one of these if I robbed a bank or won the lotto. Check out more here.
